Tonight I finished one of my grossest projects yet. It started last Thursday when the hubby came home and began looking for a specific baking sheet. I won't go into the conversation that followed when he couldn't find it. Now, there are many weird-looking unprofessional cupboards that were added to our house around the 1920s (we can tell by the hinges that resemble butterflies). I had intended to save cleaning this cupboard until much later, but as more and more items came out onto the floor, the couch and a chair, it appeared that the time had arrived. This particular cupboard is 14" wide X 4 feet high and about 6 feet deep. It has 3 shelves that travel the entire 6 feet. As you can imagine, it is difficult to reach things further back than my arm is long. Over the past couple of decades, a few things were pushed out of reach - these things were quite dusty and some housed dead bugs or better yet, bug parts. I was pleased that there was no evidence of mice or what they leave behind. It seemed like it would be just the spot for a cozy little rodent nest - back where no one can reach. Anyway, 2 large garbage bags later, it is cleared out and things are about as accessible as they can be. Another ta-da!
The bedroom clothes closet project was still going on when the gross cupboard task sort of started itself. I do have a photo of some of the things that were uncovered in my closet last weekend---
Of course the dog is just the prop for the beanie with the propeller on top that can't be seen. I wish that there had been time to photograph that early morning purse purging session before they went in the garbage. But here is the duck with the striped shorts that I mentioned in my last post and 4 pairs of shoes which I will never wear again - oh and the fashionable silver clutch purse. It may be hard to tell that the shoes right behind the purse are a matching shade of silver. I wore them twice, both around 1992 - they were monstrously uncomfortable. This little collection is in the ever-growing pile that will be donated. I am thinking that the first mass-donation will need to be done soon - while they will still fit in the trunk of my car.
After 25 years in a family home, thinking of preparing this unconventional 10 room, 2 bath house to sell in hopes of finding a smaller, more picturesque home.
Intro
I entered middle age a few years ago...okay, a little more than a few. Our daughters are 28 and 26. After they left, I cautiously redecorated their bedrooms. I did the usual, donated "Lucky" brand jeans (left from 3rd grade) and stuffed animals to a local thrift store. Next, I threw away countless plastic bags from "The Gap" and other retailers. Some of them included various amounts of change, which of course I took as my housekeeping fee. Every $6.40 helps!
I slowly bought new furniture items that I liked - a futon and frame, small roll-top desk, area rugs and lamps. One room was starting to resemble my new "office" which would double as a guest room when necessary. One morning as I was getting ready to leave for work, I heard (and felt) a very large boom-crash. I cautiously walked upstairs to find the dust clearing and about half of the ceiling of my new room on the floor. Ah, the joys of owning an antique house...
