Intro

I entered middle age a few years ago...okay, a little more than a few. Our daughters are 28 and 26. After they left, I cautiously redecorated their bedrooms. I did the usual, donated "Lucky" brand jeans (left from 3rd grade) and stuffed animals to a local thrift store. Next, I threw away countless plastic bags from "The Gap" and other retailers. Some of them included various amounts of change, which of course I took as my housekeeping fee. Every $6.40 helps!

I slowly bought new furniture items that I liked - a futon and frame, small roll-top desk, area rugs and lamps. One room was starting to resemble my new "office" which would double as a guest room when necessary. One morning as I was getting ready to leave for work, I heard (and felt) a very large boom-crash. I cautiously walked upstairs to find the dust clearing and about half of the ceiling of my new room on the floor. Ah, the joys of owning an antique house...

A new roof and Murphy's Law

This week our little nest got a face-lift. Last summer's hail storm damaged our roof sufficiently to warrant a new one. It wasn't bad enough that it wouldn't make it through one winter and this was the earliest that we could get an appointment. There were hundreds of other damaged roofs in town. Now, if I were a normal person, not someone of exceptional luck, that would be the end of the story. But, it isn't that simple.
I  was born very lucky - some of it good luck, and some, well, not so good . Examples of the latter are that I have had at least three concussions (maybe more that are undocumented). I have been in three auto accidents that totaled the cars involved and none were my fault. They were all also within a few blocks of home (statistically the norm). However, lots of good luck which involved winning things - the most valuable being a cruise. The parking gods also favor me with the sole space on the street being right in front of my destination (no matter how often it happens, my husband is still amazed).
So, back to the new roof...Wednesday morning a few minutes before 7:00, a small fleet of trucks, cars and even a bike showed up at and near our house. I don't know how many guys were there, but they started right in removing the old shingles and knocking them to the ground. By the time I got home for lunch, all of the old roofing had been taken off and hauled away. New tar paper was in place and some of the new flashing was up. That evening, an incredible thunderstorm rolled in. It rained and rained, lightening crashed all around us. The dogs were terrified of the loud thunder claps. About an hour later while it was merely drizzling, I walked into the first floor bathroom to find a few gallons of water on the floor and a wet, cracking, curling ceiling. The roofer called to see if the house had survived the storm in tact. When I told him about the bathroom, he came over at 11 PM, headlamp in place, to make the roof watertight and avoid more damage during the night. I was mighty impressed! He said right away that he would have someone come in and start to repair the water damage ASAP. The roof is all but finished and the bathroom repair began today. Here's what it looks like-

So ends another week in the life of the empty nest.
